This summer I had so much fun using gouache! My goal was to do 30 small studies…and I did. I found I rarely had time to do them with paint on location, so I traveled with a piece of Rives paper on a clipboard. I could then do my prelim study when I sound something that interested me, work fast, and gouache them at some future time. I think the process helped me think more about big shape composition and freed me to interpret in color more loosely and take chances.
Best of all, my Plein Aire painters loved using gouache… It was easy for them to travel with, not too messy and they could go back into it and over it. For all of us… If the painting didn’t work… It was just a piece of paper… and we had fun!

Susan, as always, these are wonderful. You get beautiful colors and interesting shapes in all media! Gouache seems much more interesting than I ever thought…
It sounds like it was a fun class, and I’m sure the campers learned a lot. Your studies are fascinating. I really love the last one. I keep looking at the forms at the top. They remind me of the Moai on Easter Island. The strong light/dark makes me keep looking. I love it!
These are great! I love the large pieces and unique compositions. Campers drawing on the rocks is my favorite
Very cool and inspiring for letting the shapes and pieces talk and tell the basic story. The feeling of the figures on the skyline and some with sails draw my attention.
As always you come up with a different way to be very effective. I can’t pick a favorite, they’re all interesting and eye catching. I keep going back to every one for varying reasons.
I love the figures on the rocks, as well. Such a sense of presence. And their shapes are seen in the rocks, as well, creating such unity. I love the yellow boats, too. I can see them sailing in the wind.
My comment didn’t submit but sometimes if I write something else it wil!
What a wonderful way to spend summer! I really need to familiarize myself with gouache it sounds like! These are all just gorgeous Susan! I really like how you captured all the figures on the big rock. If I had to choose I think that would be my favorite.
