This painting is from the drawing/painting workshop I took online on teachable. This was a challenging one for me. I think the overall take away was how important it is to block in the big shapes with a darker color value than I would have chosen on my own. The painting tutorial was 2 hrs long. I watched in full before beginning the painting. He made perfect sense and of course made it look like a breeze! When it came time for me to pick up the brush, I’d find myself wanting to work at my own pace (figuring out color, value, placement, etc. on my own) and would skip ahead of him. I think it shows. The instructor was super quick mixing up color on his pallet and I grew tired of trying to keep up. The other big takeaway was how deliberate he was with each one of his brush strokes. There are definitely an infinitely less number in his brushwork than mine. I tend to keep painting over areas again and again changing the value and sometimes color.
A funnyish side note. I painted this on canvas paper and it kept falling off the easel landing paint side down on the floor. At times I’d have it on my lap, or would be holding it in my hands while painting and getting paint all over the place!
I love your story about painting it! You’ll always remember that when you look at it. Paintings are the best memories.
This came out so well in spite of your technical difficulties. The softness of the flowers and the reflection of the apples are what draw me the most. It’s beautiful!
This is really nice, it looks like you learned a lot and it came out great.
Getting paint all over the place is part of the process!!! Happens when you’re really into it.

Well done and sounds like it was a great class.
Your takeaways sound right on, and it shows. I love the pathway of the the striped cloth into those loose but beautifully sculpted apples, into those delicious reflected colors in the vase. The vase is gorgeous.
So funny to hear your paint plop problem. I’ve been there too… more than once. Hail Murphy’s oil!
I think it’s just beautiful! There’s a good sense of composition and color.I feel as though I can touch the flowers!
The orange sunflower brings your eye right around the painting. Also you’ve painted the vase and apples with all their reflections and shadows so well. I say this has been a success!
