Here’s my challenge from a painting I did at camp a while ago. I wanted to paint the light on the windows on the old house but the trees tried to take the stage. I knocked Back the bushes and moved the big tree to the side a bit and made it smaller. I think it’s a better composition and is easier to see without color. Scroll down for original.

The windows are much more noticeable and the tree is no longer taking center stage, there is also much more depth with the change in value (or elimination) of the yellow bush.

Everything you did was very effective at redirecting the focus of the painting. Interesting exercise!
I think your changes really worked. My eye is pointed toward the windows by the branches of the tree…. but the tree doesn’t dominate. The value jumps seem to be simplified, making the window area the lightest and star of the scene. Mission accomplished!
The house does stand out with the changes. It still reminds me of my great aunt’s house, and I just remembered that there was a swing hanging from the tree!
