The old one was done in 2001, 22 years ago! They are both watercolor I felt like I wanted to pop the birds more. I keep going back to the old one for the way it’s more subtle.

Just in case you don’t know which is which, the last one is the old one! I think I like it better!

I like both of them for very different reasons. I like seeing the definition and color in the top one, but the bottom one seems to have an air of mystery.
I love the clean vibrant colors of the new one, but the old one is more spontaneous of course. Personally, I’d add a touch of color to the old birds and it might be a perfect in between…
I am divided as well…liking both and wanting to put aspects of both together. Just to mix it up a bit, what would happen if you kept the birds in that beautiful soft color mix, and put hem and the feeder against that bright spring like backdrop? They would appear backlit, but also pop the birds.
Just a thought…
ps. I have been back to this painting several times. I think I ultimately think the original has such beautiful loose, lush paint and edges and feeling of movement, it gets my vote untouched. You very definitely, express the moment!
At first I preferred the background of the redo and the birds on the original. Now I think the original has such a nice feeling of spontaneity and I really like the white pieces throughout. Would you every consider brightening the birds with just a few spots of color? I also like the design of the original background.
I like them both, as well. The original seems as though you are capturing them on a rainy day, looking out the rain stained window to paint them. The second one is a bright, sunny day.

I agree with Deb, I like them both for different reasons. I am leaning towards the 2nd (older) as I like the blending of your background colors
