- The painting below is the plein aire study I took this notan from. I always liked something about the painting, but felt like it had some design issues. I don’t know that I solved them, but here is one of the notans I came up with.

I really love these. All of them! I like the way you got some texture and openness in foliage/grasses in several of them. It adds a new element. In number 2 I see a plume of smoke that has a very diaphanous quality. Are you using ink or paint for these…I can’t tell, but they’re great!
wow, they’re all so strong and dramatic.
I have two that really pop for me
#2 and #6.

I love them all, as well. This is an amazing approach. #2 is just stunning and has a strong narrative with the smoke rising in the background. And #4 looks like a distant house with farmland in the foreground. They all evoke a sense of place and emotion.
These are great. You could frame a series of these studies…they are so effective just as they are,
Susan, these are all great, but #6 really stands out to me. The brushwork, and negative space created is so interesting!!!
I’m with Rose, negative space. My favs are 5 & 6. I really like the white naked pine and the black reeds by the water. The bright side of the house in #4 tells the whole story in that one. Nicely done with all of them.
