I have been looking a lot at the Russian landscape painter Isaac levitan. He simplifies his landscapes and captures the mood of light hitting the trees and ground. The result is very peaceful and calming which I strive for. Here’s an example of one of his paintings, mine when I got back from painting and the redo after I thought,’what would levitan do?’thanks Sharon!

These all look great, but I’m a little confused what’s what here…. Margaret, can you clarify for me?
I like the simplification, what strikes me the most are the pieces of light.

My final is the top two ( it’s posted twice) , the third one is what I thought was finished when I came inside after painting. The bottom is Isaac levitan an amazing landscape painter.
Now it makes sense to me! You have really captured the light, wow! I can see how you took from Levitan. The pieces of light on the water and shore are wonderful. Makes me feel a bit like I was out there on location painting, and that is a good feeling!
I feel the serenity as I stand by the water’s edge! The bits of sunlight on the land in the top painting are subtle and beautiful!
Beautiful serene painting… but with powerful light! I love the strong gold and reds framing the broad sweeps of blue. I’m not familiar with Ivan, but am happy for the introduction. Your question to yourself…What would Ivan do? Love it!
You really did the exercise the way it was supposed to be done. You took the emphasis of light in Levitan’s work and masterfully applied it to your completely original painting. The contrast of the cool blues and warm colors of the light make a really interesting painting!
Your lights are magnificent, strong.
I like how you treated the values in the water and foreground. From cool shade to warm ground and water.
