This is a still life I did last weekend. The first was from life and I labored over it for 2 days. The second was from a photo that took about an hour which I like better. My new best friend :burnt umber!

I like both too. The clarity of the second one pulls me into it. I think the pattern change on the cloth may be why.
I too love them both, Margaret. The first has a more subtle feel, softer color and edges, patterns, etc. The second seems more vivid and graphic, particularly with the stripes on the tablecloth. Both so effective in their own way.
I agree with all the above! I think I prefer the second, though, more vibrant color and the plate and table make more sense…
Margaret, I would be very happy with both. If I had to choose I’d pick the not so busy looking second picture.
The way you painted the light is just stunning.
I like them both, as well. I do especially like the flowers and background in the first and the vibrancy of the color in the second.
